With great sadness The Gordon Family would like to acknowledge that SSG Ralph Ellsworth Gordon (Ret.), of Fayetteville, NC, formally of Westpoint, VA, died Thursday, August 25, 2022. SSG Gordon completed the mission of life surrounded by his wife Shirley Gordon and their family.
Ralph was born in Ellsworth, ME, on July 31, 1934. He was family oriented and devoted not only to his family but also to his country. SSG Gordon enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1955 and retired in 1975. While serving with the utmost distinction he received the following awards and decorations: The National Defense Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign w/60 Device, Army Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Marksmanship Badge (M-16), and qualified with.45cal. pistol. SSG Gordon attended The Artillery Surveyor Specialist Course and received the 82C40 FA Surveyor MOS. He also attended the US Army NCO Academy and served in Vietnam from 23 July 1966 until 18 June 1967.
Following his military service SSG Gordon worked in the Westpoint School System in Westpoint, VA for 20 years and enjoyed doing jigsaw and word search puzzles. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Ann Murphy Gordon, to whom he was married for 49 years. Their union was blessed with three sons.
He is survived by his current wife, Shirley Gordon, of the home; his sons, Buddy Gordon (Jackie), Michael Gordon (Kari), and David Gordon (Renee); his grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and a host of extended family members and friends.
To honor his memory the family will host a private memorial at a later date.
