Ralph John Grapperhaus, "Rat" 88, of Carlyle, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home on Monday, May 19, 2025, while listening to his favorite David Allen Coe song, 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name' surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 1, 1936, in Beaver Prairie, Illinois, the son of Henry F. and Mary (Alberternst) Grapperhaus, who preceded him in death.
On October 3, 1959, Ralph married the love of his life, Reva E. Kleber, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Carlyle, beginning a 65- year journey of love, laughter, and playful banter. Together they brought to life their three beautiful children: Julie (Mark) Walker of Caryle, IL, Todd Anthony (who died in infancy), and Gail (Dallas) Edwards of Keyesport, IL. He was the proud "Peepaw" to Haeli (Craig) Robke of Breese, Emily (Jared) Rakers of Hoffman, Olivia Walker (Lucas Essenpreis) of Breese, Dillion Edwards of Keyesport, and Ellie (Jordan) Huels of Wisetown. His most prize possessions though were his 6 "Greats" who he loved with his whole heart, Walker John & Wick Robke, Eliza & Zoey Rakers, Camille Essenpreis, and Elsie Huels. Ralph is also survived by his brothers Raymond Grapperhaus, Hank (Jeanie) Grapperhaus, sister-in-law, Marcella Grapperhaus, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Harry and Ruby Kleber. His sisters; Del (Ray) Kreke, Sally (Benny) Benhoff, and Johanna (Herb) Laux; his brothers; Gene (Helen) Grapperhaus, Arnold (Jeanette, Lorraine) Grapperhaus, John Grapperhaus, Ben Grapperhaus, and Larry (Margie) Grapperhaus; his in-laws, Cynthia Grapperhaus, Eddie (Jeanne) Kleber, Anthony "Corky" (Marie) Kleber.
Known for his strong work ethic, Ralph worked for many years as a proud union laborer out of Local 581. He was a dedicated member for 65 years. One of Ralph's most memorable jobs was helping construct the Carlyle Dam. Outside of work, he was a skilled woodworker, avid hunter/fisherman, and someone who found peace and purpose in nature, especially at his ground in Covington or driving his jon boat on the Kaskaskia River.
Ralph had a witty sense of humor and a charming smile. Always present and there to support what mattered most, his family. Generous to his grandchildren, they playfully called him the Pay Master, as he always "made it rain" on birthdays, holidays, and the first of the month.
Later in life he and Reva enjoyed a daily drive in his truck. Their routine typically consisted of stopping to feed the ducks at the Fish Hatchery, admiring the view of Carlyle Lake and people watching at Wal Mart. Always in good spirits and living in the moment.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Private burial will follow. Visitation will be held from 9:00 - 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 24, 2025. at Zieren Funeral Home.
