Ramon Mendez, born on January 5, 1949, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, passed away on October 14, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved son of Dámaso Mendez and Rosa Portuguez, and brother to Ángel, Carlos, Marcos, “Cuca,” “Cuchita,” and Pura, several of whom preceded him in death. A man of few words but with a heart that touched many through his love and selfless acts, Ramon’s quiet strength and unwavering faith defined his life. His courage and trust in God gave him the strength to leave his home in Puerto Rico, as well as his siblings, to begin a new life and family with his beloved “Flaca,” Miriam E. Mendez. Married for 57 years, he devoted his life to her, his mother Rosa Portuguez, and their two children, Lisette and Ramon Mendez Jr.
Though his formal schooling was limited, his determination and work ethic were boundless. Ramon worked for over 30 years at Baldwin Hardware, where he retired with great pride. After retirement, he found joy in tending to his garden, especially his prized gandules, and was always willing to fix or repair something, often with the help of his brother Carlos. They were affectionately called “the twins,” even though one was tall and the other short. Ramon found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren Mariah, Majestic and Noah, teaching them how to hook a fish and lovingly correcting their Spanish. He cherished his daughters-in-law, Nicole and Elizabeth Mendez, as if they were his own, and shared a special bond with his nephews Carlos Miguel, Juancito, and his niece Mary.
A faithful member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, he often spent his Sundays fellowshipping with the men of his congregation. His generosity extended far beyond his home, he was a good steward of his blessings, always helping his neighbors and supporting local charities. He lived by God’s greatest commandment: to love one another. Ramon will be remembered for his contagious smile, his gentle wisdom, and his heart overflowing with unconditional love. His example of faith showed those around him what it truly means to walk closely with God. Even in times of sorrow, he taught us to rejoice and give glory to God for the gift of life.
Our warrior, our hero, you will forever live in our hearts. Your love, your lessons, and your light will guide us always.
