Derby, Va.-Randall Lee Smith, 71, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, unexpectedly at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of the Derby community. He was a retired coal miner with Powell Mountain Coal and a member of the U.M.W.A. He loved spending time at the cabin that he and his son-in-law, John, built. He loved hunting and fishing. He was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann (Honaker) Smith; and his parents, Arthur Creed Smith and Novenia (Qualls) Smith.
Surviving are his daughter, Novenia Elizabeth Hook (John), Jonesborough, Tn.; son, Randall Lee Smith, Jr. (Bernice), Surgoinsville, Tn.; two grandchildren, Brie Hook and Elizabeth Gentry; four great grandchildren, Benjamin Brodie, Evie Brodie, Trey Gentry and Britteny Gentry; brothers, A. C. Smith (Wilma), Marion, NC, Martin Smith (Libby), Kingsport, Tn. and Lewis Smith (Becky), Big Stone Gap, Va.; sister, Ann Houston (Sonny), Big Stone Gap, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00pm – 1:00pm Friday, January 27, 2023, at Gilliam Funeral Home, 618 Wood Avenue, W., Big Stone Gap. The service will follow at 1:00pm with the Rev. Phillip Earnis officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Gilliam Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the Smith family.
