Randolph Kim Obituary

Published by Legacy on Apr. 15, 2023.
FORT WORTH - Randolph "Randy" Kim was one of a kind. While neither Catholic nor Irish, Randy was often covered head-to-toe in Notre Dame Kelly Green. Full of irreverent jokes and mischief, Randy filled his life with laughter and lifelong friends.
Randy's story began on December 23, 1975, when he was born in Los Angeles, California, to his mother, Sangmi Lim Kim, and his father, Young Woo Kim. Randy spent his youth growing up in Fullerton, California, where he excelled in tennis, academics and trivia (Portugal is the world's largest exporter of...?).
After graduating from Yale University in 1998, Randy spent a decade at the Yale Endowment and found a calling in investing for mission-driven endowments and foundations. In 2008, Randy joined the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation as its Chief Investment Officer. In doing so he became one of the youngest CIOs in the country.
In 2017, Randy joined the Rainwater Charitable Foundation as its first every CIO and found a home in the Fort Worth community. Randy leaves behind him a professional legacy of young, talented CIOs whom he trained and who were among his dearest friends.
Randy passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of Monday, April 10, 2023 after a two-year battle with brain cancer. He was at his home in Fort Worth in the care of his mother, father, brother and fiancée, Andrea Estes. His passing was noted in The Allocator, which wrote "the endowment & foundation community lost one of its brightest investors, the cherished former Hilton Foundation and Rainwater Foundation Chief Investment Officer Randy Kim. He was 47 years old."
In addition to his mother and father, Randy leaves behind his brother, Brian Kim; his sister-in-law, Christine Moon; his nephew, Owen Kim; and his niece, Abigail Kim. As one of his friends so eloquently said, "Randy is now in a better place. Where everyone finds his quirkiness endearing and Notre Dame wins the National Championship every year."
