James Randy Howell, 75, of Tuscaloosa, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 2nd at DCH, surrounded by his family. A gifted artist of blooms and beauty, Randy was a premier floral designer whose creativity and heart touched countless lives over a career that spanned more than fifty years.
Randy had an extraordinary talent for bringing joy to life's most cherished and meaningful moments-weddings, celebrations, and times of sorrow-with arrangements that were as thoughtful as they were beautiful. He began his floral career at Gertrude's Florist and went on to share his gifts at Phillip's Crimson Gardens, Azalea Gardens, and Pidge's Flowers and Gifts, which he later owned. He concluded his professional career at Pat's Florist, always leaving petals of kindness, generosity and creativity behind.
His artistry was matched only by his generosity. Randy gave of himself freely-his time, his talents, and his heart. He believed that serving God was done best with our hands and feet. He was a doer, lead only by his desire to bring joy to others. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, create an arrangement for a friend in need, or offer gentle encouragement. He blessed all who knew him.
A proud 1968 graduate of Holt High School and a 1972 graduate of Livingston University (now the University of West Alabama), Randy continued to give back to his community long after retiring. He shared his passion with students at Shelton State and through classes with Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation, spreading not only the art of floral design, but his positivity and encouragement. A passionate fan of Alabama Athletics, Randy was a devoted member of the Medalist Club and a longtime supporter of Alabama Gymnastics. He generously volunteered his talents to Caring Days, a cause that was very dear to his heart. He loved his hometown, his HHS class of '68 classmates, his neighbors, and the people who filled his life with meaning and friendship.
Randy was met in heaven by his loving parents, Ralph and Gatha Howell; his brother, Jerry Wayne; sister-in-law, Ronene Howell; and his cherished friend, Wanda "Tish" Kemp. Bobo, his beloved sheep dog, greeted him at the rainbow bridge. He is survived by his brother Philip (Patsy); nieces Kristie (Scott) Taylor and Katie (Andrew) Taylor; great-nieces Katherine and Mary Scott; and great-nephews Noah and Henry. His circle of love extended beyond family, including dear friends Olice Carter, Ginny Brandon Hubbard and Donna Webb along with the many others who were lucky enough to call him friend.
Those who knew Randy will remember his generous spirit, his quick and witty sarcasm, his love of life, but above all, the way he made the world more beautiful simply by being in it.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Randy's memory to the Holt High School Alumni Association or Caring Days of Tuscaloosa (caringdays.org). His friend's are invited to celebrate his life on Thursday August 7th at 2:00 PM at Indian Hills Country Club. All friends who knew and loved Randy are warmly invited to attend and share in remembering a truly special life. A private family service will take place at a later date.
