Perry Baggett, age 85, died on September 1, 2025, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Perry was born and raised in Columbia, Mississippi. After graduating from Columbia High School, he obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Mississippi College and the University of Tennessee. He spent his career at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center where he worked for 25 years as a clinical social worker, supervising VA group homes within the community. He also worked as private counselor in the evenings at Family Counseling Services for over 10 years. He served on the Board of Directors for the VA Credit Union and the Good Samaritan Clinic. Since 1968, he was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa where he served on countless committees, sang in the choir, and was a life deacon. He participated in multiple medical and building mission trips and was actively involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry.
Perry was a very outgoing person who loved socializing, giving great hugs, and drinking coffee – LOTS of coffee. People gravitated to him because of his kind, sweet spirit as well as his great sense of humor. He was known for his wonderful Donald Duck impressions. He was very laid back and did not worry about much of anything because his wife worried about everything for him. He loved his family and the Lord with all of his heart. For the past 24 years, he especially loved being a Papa to his four grandchildren. Despite battling dementia for the last 10 years, his faith in the Lord never wavered and he maintained an amazingly positive attitude about his life – even in his last days. While his family feels an enormous void now, they are also so thankful that he is at peace and healed. He certainly left a legacy of love and compassion.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol Baggett, his daughters, Julie Burroughs (Greg) and Amy Windham (Sam), and his grandchildren, Cason and Caroline Burroughs, Sam and Avery Windham, as well as a host of other family members and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Walter and Pauline Baggett, and his brother, Grady Baggett.
The family expresses their enormous gratitude to DCH Hospital, DCH Palliative Care team, Hospice of West Alabama, Dr. John Warren and Tuskaloosa Internal Medicine staff, and HomeRN, who all provided wonderful care for Perry. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Calvary Baptist Church, Hospice of West Alabama, The Good Samaritan Clinic, or Kairos Prison Ministry.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor Perry will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa with a reception immediately following.
