Ray Earl "Chuck" Thompson, Jr., 67, of Spartanburg SC passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 7, 2025, from complications of diabetes.
Chuck was the son of the late Ray E. Thompson and Evelene Wilson Thompson of Spartanburg SC.
He was a proud graduate of Dorman High School class of 1975, Spartanburg Methodist College and USC Upstate. He graduated from University of South Carolina School of Law in 1982.
Chuck dedicated more than 40 years to providing legal services in Spartanburg, operating The Thompson Law Firm and, earlier, as partner of the Burts, Turner, Rhodes, and Thompson Law Firm. He practiced primarily in criminal defense and personal injury law and cherished the many lifelong friendships he formed with his clients and peers.
An avid outdoorsman, Chuck loved hiking the Appalachian Trail through three states and was a passionate bow hunter for most of his life. He also enjoyed reading and studying history- especially presidential history, war, and weaponry.
One of his greatest joys was spending time with his beloved dog, "Baby Girl/Princess," taking her to Milliken to run and play.
Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of 19 years, Maria Thompson; two stepchildren, Natalie and Nathan Kimbrell; and a step-granddaughter Ellie Kimbrell of Boiling Springs SC. He is also survived by his sisters, Jane Godwin (David) of Greenville SC and Kim Godwin (Winston) of Charlotte NC; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased earlier this year by his sister Lynn Thompson of Spartanburg SC.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Harris-Nadeau Mortuary and Crematory, 5880 Chesnee Highway, Chesnee SC. Visitation 2-3:00 PM with service at 3:00 PM conducted by Reverend M. Blake Kendrick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Spartanburg Humane Society or Mobile Meals of Spartanburg
