With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Raymond Armstrong, a beloved father, musician, artist, and community member. Raymond passed away on May 19, 2023 at the age of 70, Raymond held many titles in his life, from artist to entrepreneur, but his favorite role was being a father. He loved nothing more than spending time with his adult children, Mark and Niesje, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always there for them, whether he was helping them prepare for their entrepreneurial challenges or cheering on at basketball games. Surviving are his two children, Mark and Niesje Armstrong, grandsons Ray, Jordan, and little Mark, granddaughters Joie and Alexa, and great grandchildren Jordan Jr, and Nazarena, and his three siblings Hank, Janie, and Julie.
Raymond was born on May 29, 1952, at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. He was a talented musician from a young age and attended Salpointe Catholic High School where he developed lifelong friendships. After graduating, he went on to attend the University of Arizona and also enlisted in the Air National Guard, where he served until his retirement with the rank of E-7, after 33 years.
While raising his family, he served as an Awana commander in the church. He helped with his son's boy scouts and his daughter's girls scouts as well. All the kids in the neighborhood knew they were welcome.
After retiring from the military, Ray joined forces with Fletcher McCusker and Local Artists in developing the Art Fare Block along 6th Avenue, jump-starting Rio Nuevo as a destination. This was just one of the many ways Ray contributed to Tucson's vibrant arts community. In 2016, he moved to the Barrio Hollywood neighborhood, where he continued to pursue his passion for golf and became active in the neighborhood association.
Ray was also known for his dedication to fostering creativity in others. He spearheaded Open Mic and Artist Open Studio events in Downtown Tucson and continued these events at El Rio Golf Course and Community Center in Barrio Hollywood. Known by many as El Rey del Barrio, due to his leadership and inspiration, Raymond touched the lives of countless artists and community members.
His family, friends, and everyone who knew him will deeply miss Raymond. His legacy of creativity, passion, and community involvement will continue to inspire others for years to come.
Ray's family will host funeral services @ Martinez Funeral Home, 2500 S 6th AV, @ 0900 hrs. June 5, 2023 immediately followed by mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and burial with full military honors at Holy Hope cemetery
