Raymond Berard, age 87, loving husband and father of four children, passed away on December 25, 2025.
Raymond was born on February 22, 1938, in Central Falls, RI, to Florence and Edouard Berard. He attended Providence College for his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and University of Connecticut for his PhD in Chemistry. On August 20, 1960, he married Margaret Grey. He worked at Celanese in Summit, NJ, Acushnet Company in New Bedford, MA, and Interface Company in Kennesaw, GA. He held many patents at each of these companies.
Raymond lost his loving wife, Margaret, on Christmas Day, 2022 and missed her dearly. He is survived by his son Mark Berard and wife Charlotte, daughter Johanne Upton and husband Ray Smith, daughter Kris Mullen and husband Jim, and son John Berard; grandchildren Kalie Morrissette and husband Tyler, Sarah Berard and husband Caleb Bernacchio, Anya (Mullen) Peters and husband Dennis, Rachel Berard and partner Tucker Barry, Emma Mullen, Madeline Mullen, Sophia Berard, and Ava Berard; great grandchildren Grace, Isla, LydiaMarie, Joseph, Mary, and Elizabeth; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by many.
Raymond was a football fan and loved watching the Patriots play. He loved Science Fiction books and movies, playing chess, traveling, going out to eat, and humming and whistling. He enjoyed working with his hands and you could often see him fixing small appliances, gardening, doing art projects with the grandchildren, designing macramé hangers, fixing things around the house, and jingling coins in his pockets. But best of all he loved being surrounded by his family, especially his granddaughters.
Raymond was predeceased by his wife Margaret; parents, Florence and Edouard; son-in-law David Upton; grandson Michael Berard; and his siblings: Claire, Roger, Helen, Maurice, George, Louise, and John.
Visitation will be held at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 9:15am, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am.
Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery, 367 East Main Rd., Portsmouth.
