Carlsbad, New Mexico. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at West Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation has taken place.
Raymond Clyde Lain Jr. was born on January 30, 1948, to Raymond Lain Sr. and Mildred Imogene (Stuard) Lain in
McAllen, TX. The family later settled in
Artesia, NM, where Raymond graduated from high school in 1966. Raymond attended Jacksonville Baptist College in
Jacksonville, TX, where he earned his bachelor's and then received his master's at Texas Tech in
Lubbock, TX. He taught school and coached in Tucumcari, Artesia, Dexter, Tatum, and
Carlsbad, NM. One of his goals was to be a principal, which he achieved and accomplished at Tatum Schools.
Raymond spent his life teaching and coaching, significantly influencing many generations. He was a skilled athlete and participated in baseball, football, and track. He also loved to sing and was part of a band where the group sang at banquets and church. But he would say his best years were coaching alongside his best buddy and pal Gerald Burns. After retirement, Raymond was fortunate to spend more time playing golf. He had beautiful memories of those he was lucky to play with.
His love for his two daughters, Stephanie and Missy, and their hard work and the way they raised their families was immeasurable.
In 2004, Raymond married Marisela Dorado, with whom he shared the last twenty years of his life. Together, they were blessed to travel and nourish their relationship. He enjoyed attending the Dorado family gatherings where there was always love, laughter, and special moments.
Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Clyde Lain Sr., and his mother, Mildred Imogene Lain. He is survived by one sister, Janice Albright (Lain) of
Franklin, TN and one brother, Danny Lee Lain of
Spring Hill, Tennessee. Wife, Marisela, daughter Stephanie Shackelford and husband Jolly of
San Antonio, TX. Daughter Melissa Felton and husband Shawn of
Dublin, TX. Daughter Sylvia Driskell and husband Zac of
Medford, Oregon. Son, Jose Jimenez of Tatum, NM, and son, Alex Dorado of
Lubbock, TX. Seven grandchildren: Jeremy Lain of
Roswell, NM. Dustin Boyce and wife Rachel of
Dublin, TX. Kelsey George and husband Skylar of
San Antonio, TX. Brendon Shackelford and wife Keri of
