Broussard, La - RAYMOND JOSEPH MATHEWS of Broussard, LA was born on October 12,1950, to the late Helen (Ledet) and Wilbert Mathews. Raymond was the oldest of eight children. He was affectionately known as "Chuttie" to many. He grew up in Kaplan, LA and lived in St. Martinville, LA also for many years.
Raymond was a member of the 1968 graduating class of Kaplan High School. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and worked at South Central Bell for more than 10 years as a technician, lineman and cable splicer.
Raymond was an excellent storyteller and communicator with knowledge on various topics. He loved Corvettes and motorcycles, and those he owned were meticulously kept. Raymond loved playing chess and playing and watching tennis, influencing others to do the same. He enjoyed listening to music; his favorite was soul music from the 70’s and 80’s.
Raymond was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver for more than 50 years and a former member of a motorcycle club.
On the morning of November 10, 2025, Raymond passed away peacefully at Camelot of Broussard in Broussard, LA at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Helen (Ledet) Mathews; grandparents, Elba and Albert Mathews and Theresa and Albert Ledet, Sr.; nephew, Scott Mathews; great-niece, Gabrielle Mathis; three aunts, Theresa Spencer, Elizabeth Sonnier, and Celestine Knatt; and four uncles, Albert Ledet, Jr., Winfield Ledet, Junius Mathieu, and Norman Ledet, Sr.
Raymond leaves six sisters and one brother to cherish his memories: Savanna Sam, Prairieville, LA; Sandra Yancy (Clim), Manvel, TX; Jacqueline "Jackie" Stewart, Houston, TX; Agatha Thibeaux (Calvin), Kaplan, LA; Lisa Matthews (Jimmy Whitaker), Sugar Land, TX; Helen Thibeaux (Anthony), Broussard, LA; Jerold Matthews, Beaumont, TX; one uncle, Malcolm Ledet, St. Martinville, LA; two godchildren, a host of nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, November 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Vincent Funeral Home in Kaplan, LA. The ceremony will be officiated by Deacon William “Billy” Vincent. Military and Knights of Peter Claver services will be rendered.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Vincent Funeral Home, 300 Eleazar Avenue, Kaplan, LA 70548. Condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vincentfuneralhome.net. Interment is at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery, Kaplan, LA.
The family would like to thank Camelot of Broussard, the caregivers, the nursing home staff, and friends for their love, care, and support. Thanks also to those who called, texted, and prayed for the family during this difficult time. May God continue to bless and keep you.
