Wally was born on August 27, 1928, in Elgin, Illinois, to Raymond Walter Niedert and Dorothy Alvina Becker. Wally grew up with his sisters Dolores Rae (Douglas) Rogers and Betty Irene (Thomas) Maule
Wally graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of 1946. His years at Elgin High School were his glory days that kept a permanent place in his heart. Later he would become a key organizer of the Elgin High School reunions.
After High School, Wally served in World War II and was stationed in Japan and was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 1948. He served as a Special Services Tech and received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal – Japan.
He was married to Maryann, with whom he had three children: Jeffrey (Pam), Dawn (Brad), and Brad (Missy). Later, marrying Susan, who came with four children: John (Trisha), Michael (Katherine), Laura (Rich), and Sherry (Roger) together, they added a daughter, Julie.
He worked for many years with Davey Tree Company in Louisville, Kentucky, and eventually found his way into Real Estate, working for Century 21 and Boone Newson Realty.
Wally was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the Canyon Rim 3rd Ward, and served in many ward positions.
Wally had passion for Big Band music and loved acting as a DJ in his basement studio and even had a late-night radio show in Salt Lake City, reminiscing about the good old days and playing some of his favorite tunes.
He was an honorary ambassador for BYU Gymnastics and enjoyed being involved. He greeted the team as they returned home from their competitions.
Wally would eventually married Joanne Mae Jones on March 2, 2000. He became Joanne's primary care-giver over the last few years and continued his concern for her well-being until the end.
Wally is survived by his eight children and their spouses: Jeff (Pam) Niedert, Dawn (Brad) Cattermole, Bradley (Missy) Niedert, John (Trisha) Niedert, Mike (Katherine) Niedert, Laura (Rich) Peterson, Sherry (Roger) Shook, and Julie Williams.
Wally is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Walter and Dorothy Alvina Becker, and his sisters, Dolores Rae Rogers and Betty Irene Maule. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Brad (Dawn's husband)
The family would like to thank the VA Hospital and other care facilities for the care and kindness they showed to Wally and the family during his last few months.
Special thanks to the Canyon Rim 3rd Ward, especially Cheri Jackson and Sara and Garth Dunford and all the rest of the kind neighbors that watched out for him and his wife.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Canyon Rim Stake building located at 3051 South and 2900 East, Salt Lake City, Utah, starting at 11:00 a.m. with a Memorial Gathering prior to the funeral service from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

I do not remember when I first became acquainted with Wally, but after we connected, I realized that I knew his sisters Delores and Betty from our church affiliation from the time that I was a young boy, and they were adults. Wally graduated from Elgin High School in 1946, and I graduated from EHS in 1957. Despite our age difference, we had many most enjoyable conversations over the years reminiscing mainly about sports in Elgin. The man had remarkable recall for details and genuine friendships. Wally was exceptional with his interpersonal skills. It was a privilege to call him a friend. I extend my deepest condolences to his family for the loss of a man who lived life to the fullest!

Wally. You were the most friendly person I have ever known. Loved your chainsaw sharping skills and our conversations.
