Raymundo R. Santos, known affectionately as Ray to friends and family, embarked on his final journey on February 16, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on a crisp winter day of December 16, 1949, in Laredo, Texas, Ray's zest for life and love for adventure began to take root. He took his last breath in
Austin, Texas, after a heart that gave so much love simply decided it was time to rest.
A man of honor and dedication, Ray served his country with pride as a Master Sergeant Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic in the United States Air Force. After hanging up his uniform, he didn't slow down; he merely shifted gears to become a beloved bus driver and supervisor for Capital Metro, where he kept Austin moving and grooving, often with a joke or a story that left everyone chuckling.
Ray's life was a testament to his passions. He could often be found under the hood of a car, elbow-deep in grease, with a grin on his face. His home was his castle, and he was the king of fixing anything that dared to break. The open road was his muse, inspiring countless family road trips filled with laughter, sing-alongs, and the occasional detour (which, according to Ray, was just an "alternative scenic route").
Old westerns and military movies were his escape; he'd recite lines in a gruff voice, then look around the room to make sure his audience (family, friends, and his loyal dog Penny) appreciated the performance. Speaking of Penny, she was his sidekick, always ready for a game of fetch or a leisurely walk, inevitably turning into a comedic parade around the neighborhood.
Ray's greatest joy was his family. His wife, Magdalena, was his partner in crime and laughter. Together, they raised a trio of jesters - Andres, Ricardo, and Sandra - who inherited their dad's wit and wisdom. As a grandfather, Ray transformed into a playful, story-telling sage for Draven, Phoenix, Juliette, and Mila, ensuring their childhoods were filled with giggles and grand escapades.
His siblings, Ismael and Adela, shared countless memories of Ray's shenanigans, while his nephew Joseph and niece Patricia could always expect a hearty belly laugh at family gatherings. Ray's legacy is a tapestry woven with joy, humor, and a touch of mischief.
While Ray's final curtain call came unexpectedly, the stories of his escapades will be told and retold, each time with a bit more embellishment, as he would have wanted. His laughter is etched into the memories of all who knew him, a reminder to never take life too seriously.
So, as we bid farewell to Raymundo R. Santos, let's not say goodbye. Instead, let's say, "See you later, alligator," knowing full well that Ray would reply with a wink and a smile, "After a while, crocodile." His journey continues in the stories we share, the cars we tinker with, the roads we explore, and the laughter we cherish. Ride on, Ray, your legacy is as unforgettable as your humor.
