It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Rebecca Lynn Dahl (née Verweire), affectionately known as Becky to her family and friends. Becky was born on March 25, 1968, to Edmond and Eileen Verweire, and grew up northeast of Strathmore, Alberta. She was the fifth of six children raised on the family farm, where her love for country life and horses began. Many of her happiest childhood days were spent riding horses across the fields with her girlfriends and her little sister by her side.
After attending Olds College, Becky worked in Calgary, where she met her future husband, Whip Dahl. The two later settled in near Melfort, Saskatchewan, before returning to Alberta after the birth of their first son, Ty. Together, they built their home on an acreage northeast of Strathmore, where they raised their four children Ty, Clay, Zane and Chase where they embraced the ranching life with horses and cattle.
Becky’s days were full — balancing work, caring for livestock, and raising her children while Whip worked away from home. She loved nothing more than supporting her boys in hockey, lacrosse, and rodeo and caring for her beautiful yard. In October 2010, Becky’s life was forever changed by the tragic loss of Whip, but her strength, resilience, and love for her family carried her through.
In time, Becky found companionship again with Kevin Ellis, and together they shared the last 15 years of her life. Their partnership was filled with love, laughter, and countless shared adventures.
In 2013, Becky began her career as an Educational Assistant at Strathmore High School, working with students with special needs. She was passionate about her work and cared deeply for her colleagues and students, who brought her immense joy. She often spoke fondly of her “school family” and looked forward to retiring in the coming years.
Becky’s greatest joy was her family. She made it her mission to ensure everyone was cared for — calling daily to check in on her little sister, children, and grandchildren. Her warmth, humor, and boundless compassion touched everyone she met. She had a special gift for making people feel loved and valued, leaving a lasting impression on her family, friends, coworkers, and students alike.
Becky loved camping and found her “Happy Place” along the Red Deer River near Delburne, Alberta, where she built a beautiful community of friends who became family. The memories made there will forever be cherished by all who shared those summers with her.
Becky is survived by her common-law partner Kevin Ellis, her sons Ty, Clay (Kristen), Zane (Kayla), and Chase (Abigail); stepchildren Jessica Ellis and Nicholas Ellis (Sarah); and her beloved grandchildren Avery, Watson, Brynn, Wyatt, Ryley, and Jaxon. She is also survived by her siblings Jocelyne (Jesse Koester), LaRue, Marcel (Jo), and Cordell (Denise).
She was predeceased by her husband Whip Dahl, parents Edmond and Eileen Verweire, and sister Holly Schafer.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Internal Medicine doctors, Unit 38 nurses, healthcare aides, and staff, as well as the Mount Royal student nurses at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary for their care, kindness, and compassion during Becky’s final days.
Becky’s kind heart, bright spirit, sense of humor, and deep love for her family will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Becky’s memory to the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society, Strathmore, Alberta
