Rebecca Ann Apley Kirby, affectionately known as George to those closest to her, embarked on her final and grandest adventure, leaving us with hearts full of cherished memories on November 1, 2025. Born in the sunny landscapes of Albuquerque, NM, on May 29, 1953, she arrived in the world with a twinkle in her eye that hinted at the humor and love she would spread throughout her 72 years. George, a woman of wit and wisdom, navigated through life's ups and downs with the grace of a stand-up comedian. She had the uncanny ability to turn the mundane into the extraordinary, leaving a trail of laughter in her wake. Life with her was an ongoing masterclass in finding joy, and her family-her beloved husband of 54 years, William C. Kirby, to whom she had been his "Pretty woman" since 1969; her treasured children, Florence Angela Marie Thomas, John Lawrence Kirby II, and Ronnie Leighton Kirby; and she adored her 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren-they were her most devoted audience. Her siblings, Anna Sprain and Joel Apley, can attest to a childhood filled with laughter, love, and the occasional, but inevitable, sibling shenanigans. Preceded in death by her parents, Stan and Lillian Apley, and her brother Scott, George is no doubt now regaling them with tales and jokes in a reunion that's surely lighting up the heavens. George's passion for education led her to a stellar academic journey, culminating in a Bachelors and a Master of Education. She wasn't just a teacher; she was a life-changer, an inspiration, and the one who could spot the potential in every student. This dedication earned her the title of Teacher of the Year in the El Paso Independent School District, a recognition she humbly accepted with her characteristic quip, "It's just proof that even the kids can be fooled." Her comedic timing wasn't just a talent but a philosophy, woven into the very fabric of her Christian faith. She practiced a brand of Christianity that was all about love, acceptance, and the occasional harmless prank. Her joyous spirit was a true reflection of her beliefs-a testament to living life with humor and heart. George's interests were as colorful and diverse as her personality. Whether it was crocheting a blanket that could warm the coldest of nights, crafting with plastic canvas into shapes that defied logic, or baking treats so delicious they could make you forget your name, she did it all with a smile. Animals of all sorts found a friend in her, and her grandbabies knew that the best zoo was always Nana's house. To say George was loving and selfless is to state the obvious. To say she was funny is to acknowledge the sun is bright. Her love was the kind that powered through the toughest times, her selflessness the kind that never asked for credit, and her humor. Well, that was the kind that could defuse any situation, even if it was just by making a silly face. As we celebrate the life of Rebecca Ann Apley Kirby, George, to those who knew her best, let's honor her by living as she did-with laughter on our lips, love in our hearts, and a readiness to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. She may have taken her final bow on this earthly stage, but the joy she brought to our lives will continue to echo, like the Sound of her laughter, forever.
