Rev. Dr. Ann Johnson Obituary

Rev. Dr. Ann Johnson, born on September 21, 1937, in Griffin, Georgia, illuminated the lives of many through her unwavering faith and remarkable dedication to community service. She departed this earthly realm on October 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy steeped in compassion and strength, serving as a beacon of hope for those who were privileged to know.

Dr. Johnson’s journey in service began in earnest when she founded St. Ann's Mission in 1982, a Soup Kitchen that offered nourishment not only for the body but also for the spirit of countless individuals facing hardship. Her indomitable spirit led to the establishment of the Eastside Emergency Center, a shelter for women and children, in 1986, reaffirming her commitment to providing refuge for the most vulnerable members of society. Her calling as an Evangelist culminated in her ordination as a Reverend in 1983, further empowering her mission to uplift those in need.

Among her myriad contributions, the founding of Eastside Transitional Housing stands as a testament to her visionary leadership; a program that continues to thrive and foster change within the community. The Rev. Ann Senior Apartments followed soon after, ensuring that seniors could live with dignity and support. Dr. Johnson’s remarkable efforts garnered numerous accolades, including the distinguished title of Michigander Volunteer of the Year in 1993, along with multiple awards and citations from both the State of Michigan and the city of Detroit.

An alumna of Northern High School in Detroit, she further pursued her passion for humanitarian work and earned her Doctorate in Humanitarianism from Hampton University. Her scholarly achievements mirrored her vibrant personality—an embodiment of strength, resilience, and bravery, forever defined by selflessness.

In her personal life, Rev. Dr. Johnson cherished moments spent in the embrace of family, finding great joy in their gatherings and particularly in Sunday dinners, which served as her beloved tradition for reconnecting with her loved ones. Beyond her unwavering commitment to community service, she found delight in simple pleasures—engaging in spirited games of checkers and playing softball, reflecting her zest for life.

Perhaps her proudest accomplishment was the "No Child Without a Christmas" initiative, a heartfelt endeavor that made a difference in the lives of 200-300 families each year, providing essential toys, clothing, and meals during the festive season.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillie Swafford; granddaughter, Felicia Shelton; sister in Christ, Betty Parker.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Alonzo Johnson, Jr., Kortez Johnson, Zenola Gray, Dianna Johnson, Derrick Johnson and Katrinia Johnson; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; her footprint of life has touched thousands of people and extended family.

The visitation and funeral service celebrating the extraordinary life of Rev. Dr. Ann Johnson will take place on November 11, 2024, at Newcomer Funeral Home in Southwest Louisville, Kentucky. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a heartfelt funeral service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
