July 21, 1946 – August 9, 2025
Rev. Father Joseph Mary Aryee Hammond, a devoted missionary priest and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on August 9, at the age of 79. He was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer over a month ago.
Born on July 21, 1946, in Accra, Gold Coast (now Ghana), he was the beloved son of Joseph Nii Quita Hammond and Rebecca Dedei Quarshie. He was one of three brothers, alongside Joshua Nii Ayi Hammond and Emmanuel Nii Armah Hammond.
From an early age, Father Hammond showed a deep commitment to his Catholic faith. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Parish in Accra and began his religious life as a Brother of St. John of God, serving in Koforidua, Ghana.
In the 1970s, his missionary journey took him to Spain, where he joined the Crusade of the Holy Spirit in Salamanca. He continued his theological formation in the United Kingdom and was ordained a priest on August 5, 1989, at St. Patrick's Church in Walsall by Bishop Joseph Francis Cleary, VG.
His priestly ministry began in Venezuela, where he lovingly served the faithful of Our Lady of Peace Parish (Nuestra Señora de la Paz) in Guanarito, Portuguesa State, until 1995.
In 1998, Father Hammond arrived in the United States to serve the Diocese of
Knoxville, Tennessee. He was appointed Coordinator for the Hispanic Ministry in the northeastern region of Tennessee by Bishop Anthony J. O'Connell. At the same time, he ministered at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Crossville and Notre Dame Catholic Church in Greeneville for three years before being assigned to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Morristown in 2001. He became Pastor there in 2010, guiding the parish community with wisdom and compassion until his transfer in 2013 to St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Farragut, where he resided and continued serving as a priest in residence.
During his time at St. John Neumann, Father Hammond extended his pastoral care to the Hispanic communities of St. Alphonsus (Crossville), Holy Ghost (Knoxville), and Our Lady of Fatima (Alcoa), offering the sacraments and spiritual guidance with great joy and humility.
Father Hammond will be remembered for his missionary heart, his unwavering faith, and his kindness and deep love for the people he served across continents. His legacy of service and compassion lives on in the many lives he touched throughout Ghana, Spain, Venezuela, the UK, and the United States.
Visitation will be 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM on Friday, August 15, 2025 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with a Vigil Service following at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Saturday, August 16 at 10:00 AM with Principal Celebrant, Most Reverend Bishop Mark Beckman, Concelebrants, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz and Priests of Diocese of Knoxville. An interment will immediately follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Loudon County.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
