Melvin Colbert was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan to the parents of Jonathan Colbert and Diana Dewberry Colbert. He grew up and attended the public schools of Crawford and Upson County Schools District. Melvin accepted JESUS as his lord and savior and was baptized at an early age at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. J. W. Respress. Melvin continued his studies by attending the Interfaith Theological Seminary where he earned his Master in theology.
Melvin was man of good work ethics and believed in hard work. He worked in many different job entities such as Roberta Propane Gas Company, Melvin was devoted Bus Driver for the Crawford County School System he enjoyed the interaction with school children his ensured safe rides to school. He later worked as a customer service associate for Enterprise Car Rental.
When Melvin was engaged in a job venture he would be found him trying to “heal, chill, and get the best deal” his favorite pass time was Racing and working race cars with his sons and friend who enjoyed the same. If in the house he was curled up in from if the tv with his favorite shows Sandford & Son, Little House on the Prairie, Good Times to name a few these were sure to keep him in a spirit of laughter.
It was in 2004 that Melvin accepted the call into the gospel ministry. It was at New Begining Ministry in Thomaston, Ga. under the Rev. Paul Davison he delivered his first public sermon, where he step out to do God’s will.
Rev. Melvin Colbert has left an indelible impression in all our hearts and minds who had such a rare experience of meeting the man himself. Melvin was strong willed and determined. His personality was to be out spoken, you never wondered how he felt because he was straight forward as he was in his preaching style.
This remarkable life will be remembered by his loving family. His supportive wife Charmaige Welch Colbert parents Jonathan & Diana Colbert, children Melvin Colbert, Jr. Quintrell Colbert, Camell Colbert, Kameron Rivera, Demarion Colbert, Shebreka Simmons, Zykaria Colbert, Dominique Rivera, Mariyah Rivera, Siblings: Jonathan Colbert, Jr. Wendy Worthy, Melissa Colbert, Nichole (Tony) Davis, brother in law James “Tana” Welch, sister in laws ILeah Welch, Stephanie Welch Aunts and Uncles Bernice (Ernest) Wilder, Shirley Gibson, Herman (Debra) Colbert, Betty Colbert, Barbara Colbert, Peggy Evans, Josie Davis Dalton (Rose) Dewberry, Marlene Dewberry, Cecil (Geraldine) Scott, Caleb Jones, Henry Gladys Miller, Lizzie Barnes, Roosevelt (Evangeline) Miller a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends.
