Rev. Ray Sumner, age 83 years, of Whitley City, Kentucky died Sunday, August 24, 2025 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was born in Marshes Siding, Kentucky on November 4, 1941 the son of the late Homer and Loretta (Watson) Sumner. Ray had been a heavy equipment operator, was a member of the Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church, loved fishing, gardening, and camping at Dale Hollow. In his many years of service to the Lord he pastored numerous churches, 16 ½ years at New Liberty United Baptist Church and the last one was Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn “Granny’ Joyce (Jones) Sumner; daughter, Teresa Coffey; brothers, Ralph Sumner and Benny Sumner; and sister, Faye Sumner.

Survivors include his sons, Jeffery Sumner of Whitley City, Kentucky, Kevin Sumner and wife Imogene of Oneida, Tennessee, Scott Sumner and wife, Debbie of Pine Knot, Kentucky, and Barry Sumner and wife, Cindy of Whitley City, Kentucky; brother, Ken Sumner of Whitley City, Kentucky; sister, Joyce Lawson of Whitley City, Kentucky; grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Brandon, Jake, Seth, Eleshia, Johnny, Ryan, and Tyler; and 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11am Thursday, August 28, 2025 at the McCreary County Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Bowman and Bro. Terry West officiating. Burial will follow in the Barren Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 5pm Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at the Funeral Home.
