Rex grew up in Belleville, Kansas, and was drafted into the Army in 1955, where he was stationed in Korea, as a tank operator.

One thing he really enjoyed in his time at Hilltop was painting and he got great joy painting picture requests from the different employees. He also enjoyed playing checkers with the other residents, especially when he won! But he also taught others how to play checkers so they had a better chance with beating him.
