Richard (Rich) Daniel Kobold, a devoted family man, servant-hearted first responder, and joyful beacon of light, passed away peacefully with family on March 8, 2025. He was 58 years old. Born on November 21, 1966, in Shoreview, Minnesota, Rich lived a life marked by adventure, faith, and unwavering love for others.
A proud graduate of St. Agnes High School (1985) and Phoenix College, Rich dedicated his career to saving lives. He served as a paramedic and firefighter in Phoenix, Arizona, before transitioning to paramedic and EMS instructor roles in Houston, Texas, where he mentored countless first responders for over two decades. Known for his relentless dedication, Rich was always available to those in need-day or night-and famously never turned off his phone, whether answering a crisis call or offering a listening ear to a struggling colleague. His compassionate spirit and expertise left an indelible mark on his communities.
Rich's greatest joy was his family. On May 26, 1990, he and his beloved wife, Cindi Kobold (Irons), exchanged vows in a charming small white church on Scottsridge Road near Carlisle, Iowa-a humble beginning to their 35-year journey of love, laughter, and countless adventures. He cherished his role as a father to Brittani (Taylor) Stricklin and Hunter (Aubrey) Kobold, and as "Pops" to grandchildren Tatum Stricklin and Betty Kobold. A lifelong prankster and self-proclaimed "big kid," Rich's signature dad jokes, pool volleyball games, and epic board game nights created a legacy of joy.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved kayaking, camping, and grilling for family gatherings. Whether combing through small towns for antiques, cheering on Texas A&M football, or tackling home projects with his signature grin, Rich approached life with humor and positivity. His faith in Jesus anchored him, often reflecting the truth of 1 John 4:19: "We love because He first loved us."
Rich's memory will be treasured by his wife, Cindi; children and grandchildren; siblings Mary Kay (Bill) Bolanos, Debbie (Jeoff) George, Teri Kobold, and Ted (Chris) Kobold; and countless friends, colleagues, and mentees. He is reunited in heaven with his parents, Patrick and Mary Jo Kobold. While his family grieves his earthly absence, they stand firm in the promise of a heavenly reunion, assured by Rich's unshakable faith in Jesus Christ and the eternal life He guarantees to all who believe.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation (for cancer research) in his honor.
"A life well-lived leaves a story worth telling." Rich's story-of service, faith, and love-will forever inspire those who knew him.
