Richard Barranger of Seaside Park, NJ died of natural causes at Community Medical Center in Toms River on Tuesday, February 27. He was 79.
Raised in Pluckemin, NJ, Mr. Barranger was a 1962 graduate of Bridgewater-Raritan High School. He attended Courtland State College and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and served honorably for three years in the United States Army.
A multi-talented musician and performer, Mr. Barranger played guitar in folk music ensembles before discovering a passion for theater. He was an influential member of the New Jersey community theater scene throughout the 1970s and 1980s, garnering critical acclaim for his work as a lead actor, director, and set designer. He served as managing director of the Craig Theater in Summit, and worked on productions at Edison Valley Playhouse, Foothill Players, and the Villagers Barn Theater. He was nominated for an NJACT award for Best Dramatic Actor in 1975 for his performance as McMurphy in the Villagers production of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest."
Mr. Barranger lived most of his adult life in the borough Bound Brook, NJ. He worked as a master carpenter and cabinetmaker, finishing his career with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ in 2009. A devoted husband and father, he was an active supporter of the borough's recreation soccer and Little League Baseball programs.
Upon retirement, Mr. Barranger relocated to the borough of Seaside Park, where he spent his final years. He is preceded in death by father Camille and mother Grace (nee Russett). He is survived by wife of 46 years, Mary-Ann (nee Lasko), sister Susan MacKay, six children: Terence (spouse Amanda), Ian, Eric, Brendan, Lauren (spouse Justin Young), Edward, two grandchildren: Henry and Harper (Young), and two beloved dogs, Biscuit and Myles.
A viewing will be held at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Ave., Seaside Park, NJ on Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Catharine of Siena R C Church at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2024. Committal will be private.
