Obituary published on Legacy.com by Berry-McGreevey-Martens Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Nov. 25, 2025.
Richard Dale Bryan age 80, beloved husband of Teresa (nee Jubera); loving father of Andrew (Annabel), and Anthony (Amy); adored grandfather of Ainsley and Ashton; son of the late Gratis and Evelyn; brother of Ruth Ann Hyland and the late Jim, Marybelle, and Eddie; uncle of many. Richard will also be missed by his cat Queenie. Proud U.S. Navy veteran.
Richard was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio and grew up in Powhatan Point. The youngest of five, he enjoyed water skiing on the Ohio River in his youth. In high school, he loved math class and was active in many activities, including basketball. He graduated from Ohio University after his deployment in Vietnam and his time as a coal miner. He married the love of his life, Teresa, in June 1971 and moved to Middleburg Heights shortly after the wedding. The pair eventually settled in Hudson in 1972 while he worked in Cleveland. It was there that they reared their two sons.
In 1984, Richard began working as an Executive for Freddie Mac, and the family soon relocated to Northern Virginia. He adored spending time with his sons as they grew older, whether playing football in the driveway or coaching in youth sports. When his sons became teenagers, he often traveled with them to places such as Italy, Greece and San Diego. After retirement and the birth of his two grandchildren, Richard and Teresa moved back to Ohio, settling in Avon. Having always loved math, he began working as a tax preparer at H&R Block, where he enjoyed meeting his many customers and hearing their stories. He loved being "Pap Pap" to his grandchildren. Whether joking with Ainsley or watching monster trucks with Ashton, he cherished every moment of being a grandfather. Sundays were a special day, as every week he was able to spend time with his grandchildren.
Richard always loved history and watching historical documentaries. He had a fondness for Clark Bars and reading Prince Valiant in the Sunday comics. He loved both cats and dogs, caring for four dogs (Charlie, Bernie, Annabelle and Gus) and later four cats (Stubby, Calvin, Hobbes and Queenie). His favorite vacation spot was Kiawah Island, SC, where he loved to build sandcastles, first with his two sons, and later his two grandchildren. He was a big Cleveland sports fan and often attended sporting events with his sons. He loved driving to garden centers with his beloved wife.
Richard will be adored, loved, and greatly missed by his family. Whether known as Richard, Rick, Rich, Dad or Pap Pap, he will always be cherished and his memory, love and kindness will never be forgotten.
