Richard Aldrich Caldwell of Bridgewater, died peacefully in his home on October 9th, 2023 at the age of 88.
Born in Newton on June 12, 1935, Richard wore many hats throughout his extraordinary life. He was the beloved husband of Sandra E. (Wettergreen) Caldwell and son of the late Morand and Dorothy F. (Aldrich) Caldwell. Besides his loving wife Sandra, he is survived by his sons David Caldwell and his wife Debra of Norwell, Daniel Caldwell of Tennessee, Douglas Caldwell and his wife Marta of Marshfield, and his daughter Deborah Wooten-Angelo of Plymouth. He is the grandfather of Brandon, Dominic, Zachary and Brianna Wooten, Rachael Caldwell, Cassandra, Jessica, Benjamin and Daniel Caldwell II. Also the great grandfather of Kaydence Wooten and Kace Wooten.
In addition to being a beloved family man, Richard was a perpetual student, always eager to learn. Caldwell was a graduate of Arlington High School and New England Aircraft. He later went on to graduate from Boston University with his Bachelor's in Psychology and two Master degrees in Education and Psychology.
Richard proudly served his country from 1955 to 1995. He started his military career in the US Army, serving in the Sahara Desert before transferring to the US Navy where he ascended to the rank of Senior Chief. During the final years of his military career, Caldwell provided his assistance in Operation Desert Shield / Storm and the Liberation of Kuwait.
Woven throughout his life, Richard held many posts alongside his military endeavors. He was a physics teacher at Hingham High School, the Veterans Administrator of Norwell, and an on-call Firefighter. When not working, he kept busy with a variety of volunteer activities across the south shore. From 4H to the Boy Scouts of America and the Civil Air Patrol, Richard was an active leader in his community. Even later in life, Richard continued to support those around him, taking time out of his schedule to volunteer for Hospice and the South Shore Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church of Christ, 460 Main St., Norwell on
Tuesday, October 24th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may
be made to his favorite charities Shriners Hospitals for Children and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I had Mr. Caldwell as my physics teacher at Hingham High School in 1975 and 1976. Now I´m retired and remembering the most influential people in my life; those who awakened me and steered me to successes over failures and mediocrity? Mr. Caldwell was the first and thus the most important. I hated school but loved the hardest class the school had to offer. It was Mr. Caldwell that I thank for caring to be excellent for my sake.

I'm so sorry to hear of Richard Caldwell's passing. I am Sandra Wettergreen's cousin and would like to get in touch with her. She was his wife. I have many memories of both of them from my childhood and was in fact in their wedding. If you read this, Sandy, please be in touch!
Much love,
Shelley Steen Ackerman
