Richard Ivan Cárdenas, age 84, passed away on October 20, 2025. He was born on November 25, 1945, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Isaias and Alicia (Alice) Cárdenas.
Ivan graduated from North High School and entered college at age 28. He went on to earn degrees from Metro State College and Adams State College, where he received his Master’s in Counseling.
A proud veteran, Ivan served his country for 30 years in the Air Force, Air National Guard, and Army National Guard.
Throughout his career, Ivan was deeply committed to serving others. He worked as a probation officer for 27 years and later as Director of Job Development at Mesa State College (now Colorado Mesa University). His dedication extended to the community as a member of the Latin Anglo Alliance, where he served in many capacities, and as a mentor through the Partners program. He also shared his love of cars and beer as a member of The Corvette Club and the Home Brew Club.
He was the proud owner of a 1960 Corvette which he owned for 63 years.
Ivan gave generously of his time and wisdom, serving on the Colorado Domestic Violence Program Advisory Committee and on the board of Colorado West Mental Health. Additionally, he volunteered with Hopewest Hospice providing respite care.
He valued mentorship, proactive leadership, and his roles as a father, brother, and husband. Proud of his Chicano heritage, Ivan spent his later years reconnecting with his family’s Spanish language.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert I.; and his sisters, Pricilla Lingenfelter and Grace Bellman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jane, whom he met on a blind date; his daughter, Elicia Cárdenas (Andy McKerrow); his brother, Alfredo Cárdenas (Carol King); his sister, Juanita Cooper (Sterling Cousins); and many beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A celebration of Ivan’s joyful life will held in the spring of 2026.
