Obituary published on Legacy.com by McDonald Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Picayune on Mar. 2, 2026.
Richard H. Carlstrom

June 6, 1931 - February 7, 2026

Picayune, MS - After a long and beautifully lived life, Richard Herman Carlstrom, 94, went home to glory on

Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Richard, was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Evelyn E. Braud Carlstrom, his stepson Ira Michel, his

parents E. Ferdinand (Ferdie) and Etta Meyer Carlstrom, sisters Joyce M. Eklund, and Nancy A. Larson.

He is survived by daughters Janetta S. Stephen (Michael), Sara L. Lee (Robert); stepson John A. Coroy II (Marla) and

step-granddaughters Dawn E. Michel Teller (Tim), and Denise Michel Serigne (Ken).

Born in Osceola, Wisconsin, Richard grew up enjoying the natural beauty of the rivers, lakes and countryside

fishing, swimming, and climbing the hills off of the St. Croix River with his sisters. As he aged, his summers

were spent helping to manufacture wooden cheese boxes in his Grandparents Meyers' factory. He graduated

high school in 1949 as salutatorian, and then entered the Navy ROTC program at Oregon State College

majoring in mechanical engineering. Lt. Richard H. Carlstrom, served six years active duty with assignments

aboard a destroyer in the Pacific and the Mariana Islands. While stationed in San Diego, CA, he met and

married Virginia Lee White; having two daughters, Janetta and Sara. Following military service, he worked for

aerospace contractors in San Diego, CA and later in New Orleans, LA. His last 21 years of employment was as

Director of Physical Plant Services at the University of New Orleans. At UNO, he met his second wife, Evelyn E.

Braud Coroy. Both retiring from the University; they moved to Hide-Away Lake in Carriere, MS.

In retirement, Richard and Evelyn loved the property on the lake. Enjoying friends and family with many

occasions, celebrations, holidays, cook-outs, local events and travel. Richard continued to use his engineering

skills by volunteering time to the Architectural Committee with Hide-Away Lake and assisting in the repairs

and upkeep of the local Methodist Church. In 2000, after the passing of his wife, Richard "took to the road".

He hooked up his travel trailer every spring and traveled across the United States and Canada. He hiked and

visited famous birding spots. He recorded the highest geographical point of every state he visited, and kept a

detailed log of the various species of birds he viewed.

A memorial service will be held at McDonald Funeral Home in Picayune, MS on March 11, 2026 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, with a graveside service following at New Palestine Cemetery.
