POLAND – Richard R. Coe, 79, of North Gage Road, died unexpectedly at home on August 30, 2021. His passing occurred peacefully in his sleep.
Mr. Coe was born on January 5, 1942 in Utica, a son of the late Claude and Grace (Hawkins) Coe. He received his education at Poland Central School and was involved with farming from an early age. On June 30, 1962, he was united in marriage with the former Sharon M. Murphy at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Utica. Richard worked for the Utica Box Company for 26 years and then operated a dairy farm with his sister, Grace, until 1994. Since selling the dairy herd, he had harvested and sold hay with the assistance of his sons.
Richard took great pride in his cows and enjoyed bowling in his earlier years. He was fond of puzzles and looked forward to all the folks he met on his weekly shopping trips. Richard was often found riding on his Golf Cart and watching Westerns on T.V.
Survivors besides his wife of 59 years, Sharon, include four children, Richard (Lori) Coe, Jr. of West Winfield, Kenneth (Darlene) Coe of Poland, Tammie Forbes of Cold Brook and Michael (Veronica) Coe of Deerfield; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Doris Piechowicz (Chuck) of Utica, Patricia (Donald) Roth of Schuyler and Judy (Gordon) Murray of Deerfield; two brothers, Claude Coe, Jr. of Holland Patent and Harold (Jean) Coe, Sr. of Clark Mills; many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Sandra Prestel; and his faithful companion, "Chewy" (AKA "Rabbit").
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor DiFillippo and Grace Prestel; one brother, Howard Coe; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Forbes.
A private funeral will take place at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, at the convenience of the family. Interment will follow in Poland Cemetery. There are no public calling hours.
The Coe family extends sincere thanks for the compassionate care provided by the first responders, state police and related agencies.
Please consider memorials to the Herkimer County Humane Society, P. O. Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407.
