Wow. I'm so sorry to see this. Early in 1977 Peter Karas, my first mentor in photography, a staff photographer at the Bergen Record and a teacher at FDU introduced me to Dick Costello. Dick and Dennis, another staff photographer at the Home News, became my 2nd and 3rd mentors when Dick took me on as a full-time free-lance photographer to fill in for another staff photographer convalescing with a badly broken leg.
Dick was a gentle and patient mentor who made me a better news photographer and when I was done at the Home News he vouched for me for my next gig working full-time free-lance at the Hudson Dispatch with Bob Krist and Linda Cataffo, my 4th and 5th mentors.
I think the best thing he taught me was that instead of my offering both a vertical or a horizontal photo to please the editors with a choice to make composition easier (they always chose the lesser one), was to only create one best, tightly cropped single photo to illustrate an article that the editors couldn't screw up.
For a young, fledgling news photographer it was a brilliant insight. You don't work for the editors. They work for you. Do your absolute best in creating an image and the editors will find a way to use it!
Goodbye Dick. I'll see you soon and we can talk some more.

Dick Costello was a true professional in my 30 years with NBPD he would show up at crime scene. As a police officer you could let him in anywhere talk to him and never worry he would do anything that would get the officer in trouble kind of guy you could trust to the moon and back just a great guy.
