Richard Dunagan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Gallo Funeral Home - Guthrie on Mar. 15, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Lee Dunagan, 72 of Edmond, Oklahoma. Born on November 15, 1953 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to Abe and Nellie Dunagan, he was the youngest of eight children. He left us on March 12, 2026, leaving a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Richard was a man of quick wit who loved to joke and make others laugh. Most friends and family truly enjoyed his infamous one liners that he could deliver with such a straight face. He was generous, extremely hard working, caring, loving, protective, and had a stubborn streak that so uniquely defined him.

Richard was an all-state basketball player for Guthrie High School and then went on to play college ball at Panhandle State. He married Glenda Kay Porter and to that union two sons, Richard Brent and Rusty Lee. Then later in life, he married Cathy Lynn Hammitt with whom they adopted Jeramiah Michael.

Richard worked most of his life in the oil field retiring after over 40 years in the industry. In his retirement, he enjoyed watching OU football and college basketball. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his yard and various other projects. But above all, his most cherished accomplishments were his sons.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Evelyn, Marilyn, Linda; brother, Paul; and granddaughter, Marissa.

Richard is survived by his wife of 21 years, Cathy; three children, Brent and wife, Tracy of Guthrie, Rusty and wife, Angie of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, and Jeramiah of the home; three step-children; sisters, Carol and Connie; brother Jack; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other loved family and friends.

Viewing for friends will be held Monday, 2:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday March 17, 2026 at First Assembly of God Church located at 1900 South Division Street in Guthrie. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.
