Obituary of Richard Dean Flor
On 6/22/2024, Dick, age 89, died of natural causes at his home.
Dick was born to parents, Ludwig and Alliene Flor on August 31, 1934 in Minneapolis, MN. Growing up in humble settings, he enjoyed boxing, automobiles, art of course, and hanging out with friends that lasted a lifetime.
Dick went into the army after attending South High School and was in Korea and California during his military career. He went on to college for art at the University of Minnesota for a couple years and called himself a Golden Gopher. He then worked as an artist at Brown & Bigelow before moving on to Webb Publishing as an art director and illustrator. He made tons of great friends at Webb and started to get paid for doing his dreamwork as a cartoonist. Upon being one of the first to become part of "Corporate Down-Sizing," Dick built Dick Flor Graphics along with his brother, Mike, to become a sought after cartoonist for companies like Cosmopolitan, Northwest Airlines, General Mills, Honeywell and many others. His art still hangs in places around the country to this day.
He was married to his wife, Ardelle for 65 years and she was the twinkle in his eye. They had 3 kids: Scott (who passed away shortly after birth), Jon and Dawn. They saw a lot of games played by their kids and taught them life lessons early and frequently. Upon being empty-nesters, they tried to hit nearly every casino in the United States, or so it seemed. They were having the time of their lives until Ardelle got a horrible disease called Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD). So, after being cared for in every way by his wife, Dick had to pick up that ball and care for both he and Ardelle. It's often said that new love is the greatest love of all, but I beg to differ. Watching two people grow old together and after 60 years of marriage show they are even more in love, is the greatest blessing we got to witness.
In his free time, Dick enjoyed working on cars, avidly participating in politics as a lifelong democrat, reading, doing crossword puzzles, gambling with friends and wife, Ardelle, at the casinos and always cracking jokes to make people laugh and have a good time. He liked messing with his 8 grandkids and 5 great grandkids. Dick was always up for going out to lunch or dinner and he usually was the one who picked up the check.
Dick's family is deeply saddened by his death but are eternally grateful for his long life with so many great friends and generations of family to uphold the silliness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mike Flor, wife Ardelle, son Scott and great-granddaughter Elle Marie Flor.
Dick is survived by his kids: Dawn (husband Don) and Jon (wife Mary). Grandchildren: Jessica, Deanna, Andy, Matt, Ben, Alayna, Will and Ricky. Great grandkids: Liam, Lynnea, Mia, Emmi and Olivia.
Dick was a kind, creative, and fun-loving soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew him
A Celebration of Life will be held July 30th, 2024 from 5pm to 8pm at Hillside Church, 4300 W 98th St, Bloomington, MN 55437
