Richard George Grimm, 91, of Cedar City, Utah passed through the veil into the loving arms of his eternal companion, Leona Dousett Grimm on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
Richard was born on February 22, 1932 in Los Angeles, California to Leslie and Uldena (Betty) Grimm. He married his beautiful eternal companion, Leona Dousett, on October 1, 1955 and was sealed to her for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 20, 1962. Leona passed through the veil to wait for Richard on July 26, 2015. Richard missed his "dear", Leona, very much and we are joyful the two are now reunited.
Richard grew up and lived in the Los Angeles area and joined the Navy Reserve after graduating from High School. He was drafted and trained as an Engineman in San Diego and served during the Korean War. He was sent to the East Coast in 1951 and was assigned to the ice breaker USS Staten Island (AGB-5). He was a Petty Officer 3rd class. In 1954, Richard was honorably discharged from the Navy and started working for the Union Pacific Railroad. That is where he "met a beautiful young girl with red hair" (Leona).
Richard said that he "knew the Lord sent Leona to guide him" and opened the door for him to find The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a faithful member and served in many leadership positions with fond memories and experiences as a Cub and Scoutmaster, young men's president, bishopric member, high counselor, seventy, and temple worker. He had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ that was felt by others through his kindness and actions. He was always concerned about the needs of others and strived to uplift them through kind words and encouragement. It was common for Richard to tell people to trust in the Lord and pray for help and guidance. He was a great example of a disciple of Christ.
Richard joined the Los Angeles County Fire Department in 1959 and worked at several stations in his career including stations 47, 17, 20, and 108. He held the positions of Fireman, Inspector, and Engineer. He deeply loved the fire department and was honorably retired after 15 years due to a career ending injury in 1974. Throughout the rest of Richard's career, he worked in fire and safety positions with several companies until his eventual retirement.
Richard loved driving to explore. Many family trips included taking roads on (and not on) the map to "see where it goes". The family Rambler car was legendary for navigating roads with which real 4x4's struggled. Until deciding he should not drive anymore at the age of 90, he would venture off on long drives to see the scenery and just explore.
Richard was a loving husband and father of 3 active boys who will miss him deeply, Eric (Susan), Darryl (Karin), and Aaron (Cathleen). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held on Friday, March 17th. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 with the service starting at 11:00am at the Kanarraville chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
