Richard Gumble Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Richard E. "Dick" Gumble, 90, of Owego, NY passed away peacefully with loving and loyal family members at his side on Saturday, September 6th.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Mark Sr. and Kathryn Gumble; sisters, Jane Doyle and Marcello Roberts; brother, Mark Gumble Jr.; wife and mother of his children, Ann Gumble; and nephews, Tim Gumble and Steven Scalese.

A patriarch of a large and devoted family, Mr. Gumble is most proud to be survived by five children, their spouses and families. They include Richard Jr. and Andrea Gumble and their children Livia and (Lewis) Cucciara, Logan and Alaina; Carmen and May Gumble, and their children Alison and (Joe) McQuade and Robert and (Serena) Orleski; Mark Gumble; Darleen and (Michael) Tibbs and their children Justin, Devin, and Mikaela; and Ann Marie and (Eric) Peterson, and their children Treynor, Riley and Donovan. Additionally, Mr. Gumble was blessed to be adored by seven great-grandchildren, several dear nieces and nephews, and a long-time friend, Pat Ellis.

Richard grew up as a highly spirited boy before graduating from Nicholson High School, PA in 1953 and served in the Army, as a cook, in the Korean War stationed in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he would relocate to NY and begin working for IBM in 1956, a company he was loyal to for 34 years. While employed at IBM during the 1970s-80s, he utilized his entrepreneurial skills to create and operate Gumble's Portable Catering, a successful business that ran for nearly two decades with family and wonderful friends. Upon retiring from each occupation, Mr. Gumble would open R.E. Gumble's Farm and become an accomplished owner, breeder and trainer of standardbred harness racehorses for many years. He found great joy from his life-long passion for horses and maintained many great friendships, who visited his farm often. With friends and family, he enjoyed watching those horses, whether winning or losing, at Tioga Downs and other racetracks in the northeast. Throughout his life, Mr. Gumble was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and many walks of solitude with his dogs, Floyd, Fletcher and his God, in the woods. Richard liked most people and all animals, especially good horses and dogs. He equally enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren compete and succeed in their numerous sporting activities.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. with funeral services immediately following at 11:00 a.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, located at 15 Park Street, Owego, NY. Burial will be held privately at the Nicholson Cemetery, Nicholson, PA at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard E. Gumble's memory to a charity of one's choice.
