Richard J. Hofmann, "Rich," age 88, of Haddon Heights, New Jersey, passed away in his Ocean City, NJ home on July 8, 2024. He was a hardworking man with a keen intellect and an athletic prowess who valued his role as husband, dad, grandpop (Poppy), and great grandpop over everything else. His motto "family first" resonated through life's joyous occasions as well as challenging times.
Rich is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 66 years, Linda (nee Kelly) and the family he adored, sons: Richard (Christine), George (Nicole) and Troy; daughter, Stacey Hofmann DiCostanzo (Pasquale); grandchildren: Richie (Ryan), Joseph (Laura), Gianna DeStefano (Marco), Noelle, Reed (Katie), Brooke Hatzell (Jack), John and Sofia; and great granddaughters, Hannah and Maya. He also leaves a sister, MaryAnn Marlowe (the late Edward), and brothers: the late Robert Hofmann (Joan), William (Joan) and Charles (Cathy) as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Charlotte (nee Reed).
Born in Astoria, New York, he found his way to South Jersey in the third grade and was able to recall every classmate and adventure in Bridgeport in vivid detail throughout his entire life. The family eventually moved to Haddon Heights where he laid roots for the majority of his life.
Rich graduated from HHHS in 1954 and his skill in baseball and basketball took him to the University of Delaware. After college he joined the Merchant Marines where he saw the world. He then settled back in his hometown and married Linda Kelly, and they raised their family there together. He began his professional life as a land surveyor for Reuters Engineering, worked many years for Cherry Hill Township and wrapped up his career at Pennoni Associates in Haddon Heights as a construction inspector.
He continued his love for baseball through coaching Little League where he stressed the importance of team and influenced many a young life. He grew the most amazing tomatoes and cucumbers and he never left a twig or leaf on his property for long. Rich loved weekends at his beloved lake house on Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos which was a family gathering place and eventually, he found his way to Ocean City, NJ, where he enjoyed Sitting On the Dock of the Bay (his favorite song).
He was a man of integrity with an uncanny ability for remembering faces and names and will be sorely missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects 6:00 - 7:00p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2024 at EVOY BANASZ FUNERAL HOME, 129 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, NJ. Mr Hoffmann (as I always called him) was a fixture at the HHYA little league fields. He was always with a smile and kind word.
Sir, you will be missed. Love to your family, from mine. Margaret Bransdorf Greenawalt.
