Richard (Dick) J.B. Hyland, 90, of Poughkeepsie, passed away on May 8, 2025, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Richard was born in Banchory, Scotland, on August 15, 1934. He was the son of the late Francis and Catherine Hyland. Richard immigrated to the United States at the age of five and spent his childhood between New York City and Pine Bush, NY.
He attended the Millbrook School and the University of Maryland.
Richard proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.
On December 29, 1979, in Pine Bush, he married Marjorie (Maggie) F. Schweizer.
Richard worked as an electrical engineer for IBM in Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill, retiring in 1991.
A true car enthusiast, Richard loved his Porsches. He could often be found working in his beloved garage or attending events at some of the country's best racetracks-Watkins Glen and Lime Rock being his favorites. He was a member of the SVRA, the 356 Registry, and a charter member of the Hudson Valley Region of the Porsche Club of America.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Maggie), of Poughkeepsie; his daughters, Brenda Berry of Poughkeepsie and Catherine Hyland of Austin, Texas; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kristine Hyland of Poughkeepsie; and two grandchildren, Brenden and Kylah Hyland.
He is also survived by his siblings: sisters and brothers-in-law Oonagh and Richard Bowler of Newmarket, England, and Fiona and Ross Turner of Australia; and his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Ana Hyland of Orange, California. Richard is also remembered by many nieces and nephews, along with his dear friends-the Hunters-who were like brothers to him.
He was predeceased by his son, Richard; his brother, Shaun Hyland; and his son-in-law, Bob Berry.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York. A funeral service with military honors will follow the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Richard's name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
