Richard Albert Knapp, a longtime resident of the St. Johns area, died peacefully on March 2, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born in Alma, Michigan on July 15, 1941, Richard was one of four children of Albert "Russell" and Ermina (Bowman) Knapp. Following graduation from Alma High School, Richard served with the United States Army in the financial office. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Spring Arbor College, where he met his future wife, Betty Jo Marsh. They both studied to be teachers and married on June 17, 1967.
Richard later earned a Master's degree from Central Michigan University, further advancing his career in education. Richard and Betty Jo built a home on Maple Rapids & Dewitt Rd, where they raised their two children, Randy and Melinda.
Richard and Betty Jo both enjoyed long careers at Fulton Elementary Schools, working together for forty years. They retired on the same day in 2006. Throughout his career, Richard was a dedicated teacher, counselor, and coach. He taught 5th-12th grade math and English, speed reading, adult education and was a talented computer tech for the schools. He also coached track and cross country and was a beloved mentor to many students.
In addition to his career, Richard had many passions, including running, reading, and solving puzzles. He had a natural talent for computers and could fix or figure out just about anything. Known for his good humor, he was always ready with a joke or pun, and he loved waking his wife at night to share them. His ability to connect with people was remarkable-whether family, friends, or students, Richard made an impact wherever he went. He knew people everywhere he went and had a special gift for making connections. He was fun-loving, kind, gentle, and had a playful spirit. Richard had a strong faith and was a devoted member of Gideons International. He read his Bible daily, drawing strength and guidance from it. In retirement, Richard enjoyed traveling with his college friends and Betty Jo. He also took meticulous care of his lawn, mowing it three times a week with perfect straight lines, and ensured his driveway was cleared of snow as soon as it fell during winter.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Jo; his son, Randy (Deb) Knapp; his daughter, Melinda (Daniel) Robison; his grandchildren, Tyler, Nicole (Spencer), Mickayla, and Joshua; his great-grandson, Greysen; his sister, Betty Jean (Bill) Switzer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patricia Anne Knapp; and his brother, Raymond Knapp.
