Richard P. Mann, age 95, passed away at CHI Health Mercy Hospital on November 4, 2025.
He was born April 14, 1930, to the late Clare and Opal (Liminger) Mann in Shenandoah, IA. Richard honorably served his country for 40 years. His military journey began in high school as a platoon leader in the R.O.T.C. and concluded at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he retired on April 14, 1990, with the distinguished rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Throughout his career, Richard held numerous leadership and training roles. He was a Basic Training instructor with the 10th Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, and served as a platoon leader and full-time training officer for HHC 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry. He later became Battalion Executive Officer at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and worked in the Adjutant General's Office at Camp Dodge, Iowa. His service also took him to Camp Ripley, Minnesota, Fort Benning, Georgia, and other locations. Richard proudly served on active duty during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. His dedication and valor earned him many honors, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Honor Medal, Air Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Iowa State Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, and many others too numerous to mention. Richard has stayed very active in retirement pursuing his many interests. Richard has been involved in carpentry and construction since the early 50's, and dove into building a greenhouse and woodshop on his property. Richard also involved himself in creative passions like furniture making, stained glass, wood carving and landscaping. Richard was a master gardener and had an extensive garden and large greenhouse that housed a coy pond and 10 foot fruit producing fig tree. Richard was a dedicated family man...he married Wanda Traub in 1954 and they were together until her death in 2012. Richard and Wanda had 6 children, Mark, Scott, Craig, Cathy, Christy and Michelle. The family has since grown to include 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. As previously mentioned, Richard was a skilled carpenter and mason, he used those talents to build a house for his family that, through many additions and remodels was home for 68 years. Words cannot fully express the pride and love we feel for Richard as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His legacy of strength, dedication, and creativity lives on in all of us. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Mann; son, Mark Mann; brother, Don Mann.
Richard is survived by his children, Scott Mann (Shelly), Craig Mann, Cathy Mann (Steve Drzaic), Christy Reikofski (Mike), Michelle Osterman (Randy); brother, Frank Mann; grandchildren, Michael Thomas (Heather), Christopher Thomas, Heather Valski (Matthew), Sara Widhelm (J.D.), and Kelsi Frazier (Jared); great grandchildren, Molly, Cooper, Grayson, Anna, Huxley, Silas, Crew, Evie, and Millie; a host of other family and friends.
