Richard Mullaney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory - North Port on Feb. 12, 2022.
Obituary of Richard F. Mullaney
Mullaney, Richard Francis, Jr., 89
Ever vigilant and bravely facing the demands of each day, Dick passed to the other side on February 10, 2022, his duty done. He was born on May 31, 1932, in Roslindale, MA, the youngest son of Richard F. Mullaney, Sr. and Anna Pauline (Sullivan) Mullaney, brother to Donald Joachim and Colette Ann (Mullaney) Maillet, all deceased.
Dick graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1953, traveling around the world three times. He used his first year's earnings to send his parents to Ireland. He then joined the Navy, flying jets from aircraft carriers. Dick served as a volunteer firefighter in Pensacola Beach, FL. Retiring from active Navy duty as a lieutenant commander in 1966, Dick spent the rest of his career flying commercial jets for Northeast Airlines, then Delta Airlines, retiring in 1989.
He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years, splitting his time between Cape Cod, MA and Venice, FL with his beloved wife, Mary. They were married in 1956 at St. Theresa's in West Roxbury and celebrated 65 years together. Dick embraced his friendship with Bill W. late in life and we all celebrated his sobriety during his retirement years. He also embraced a deep spirituality, practicing meditation as well as his Catholic faith.
Dick, aka Dad, Grandpa Dick, Gramps, Uncle Dick, Rich, neighbor, and friend, brought a smile to the face of everyone he encountered. He had a unique blend of gentleness, intensity, and moxie. Skilled with operating all forms of crafts – sailboats, cars, jets – Dick could fix anything, build anything. He was a man of few words, dry humor, and wry observations. Generous beyond belief, he shared whatever he had, needing nothing beyond a friendly smile and a straight answer.
He leaves his wife, Mary (Butler) and daughters Christine (John) Oskirko, Marie (Tony Foran) Mullaney, and Carolyn Mullaney. He was predeceased by daughters Patricia Louise (Patty) and daughter Theresa (William) Renaud. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Matt Renaud, Erin (Renaud) Seidel, Thomas Foran, Ross Merrick, Lynne Foran, James Merrick, and Luke Foran, as well as great grandchildren Carter and Aria Seidel. He also leaves his cherished nieces and nephews, great and great grand nieces and nephews and many treasured friends. He loved us all and we loved him. We miss him terribly.
A funeral service will be held at Cape Cod in the springtime, with arrangements by Hallet Funeral Home, date and time to be determined. A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Osprey, FL on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 10:00 AM. Donations may be made in Dick's memory to your local cancer center or AA inter group.

We loved our times with you in Florida and on the Cape. Many ice creams at Smugglers. You were always ready to listen, not only about sports but also about life in general. You shared your beach with us and even offered us a place to stay after we left Cape Cod. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and the whole family. Love, Joanie and Jack

Dick will be missed at the bridge table in Harwich. He was a good player, and a sweet guy.

Dick flew with me in his copilot years, before being a Northeast and Delta Captain. I always loved drawing him in my right seat. He was one of the BEST!!!
