Born in Brooklyn, NY on February 18, 1944, he was the son of the late Joseph and Gladys "Mary" Cannon Paterek. He was a 1962 graduate of Galway High School. Dick proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1964, aboard the USS Kenneth D. Bailey. Following his military service, he was employed as a machinist with the General Electric Company in Schenectady, where he worked until his retirement.
He enjoyed being on his boat at Sacandaga Lake, where he spent countless hours with family and friends. When he wasn't on the water, Dick could often be found at Neri's Home, OTB, golfing, or visiting the casinos with his best friend, Mike. He never missed a sporting event, concert, play, or ceremony for his beloved grandchildren, Tayler and Brody, and his pride in his children and grandchildren was evident in the way he spoke of them often. Dick also devoted many years as a volunteer cameraman for the live television program Schenectady Today, later known as Capital Region Today on SACC-TV, where he worked behind the camera after finishing his night shifts at GE. The friendships he built there lasted a lifetime, and the group continued to celebrate their birthdays together every year.
Dick is survived by his children, Sean (Joanna) Paterek and Kristen Paterek, both of Galway; his brother, Edward (Kathy) Paterek; and two beloved grandchildren, Tayler Rohling and Brody Paterek. He also leaves behind his lifelong best friend, Mike (Betty) Neri.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Cemetery, 51 N. Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY, with The Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis E.V. presiding. The U.S. Navy will perform Funeral Honors to begin the service.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dick's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Rose & Hughes Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, NY 12010. Please visit Richard's tribute page at www.roseandhughesfh.com

Dick was one of my favorite mail customers. I'm in shock to hear of his passing. I, like everyone else, will miss him badly. Rest in peace my friend

We were friends growing up Lived next door to each other. played baseball in the field next to his house. He crowned me queen once with a crown of burd ox. excuse my spelling. Growing up back then was fun He will be missed but the memories remain. Condolences to the whole family

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. His Mom and my Mom (Mary Grant) worked together in the Galway school cafeteria for many years. They were the best of friends! I graduated with Dick. I knew him as "Richie". My deepest sympathy to all.
