Richard "Rick" Otto Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2025.
Richard Robert Otto passed away at the age of 74, surrounded by peace and love, on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at his home in Evanston, IL. Rick was a beloved friend, father, partner, and valued professional colleague, and he maintained relationships that lasted decades. He was born on June 7, 1951, to Margaret Mary Grace Otto and Robert Otto, who raised him along with his brother Robert (Bob), in Chicago. Rick grew up playing and then working in Chicago Park District parks, where he and his friends could frequently be found on the basketball court. Raised Catholic, Rick attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary South in Chicago with the intention of becoming a priest, but life had other plans for him. After graduating from Lewis College (now Lewis University -- go TKE!) Rick worked with and supported communal living groups; married and raised his children; and obtained a graduate degree from Loyola University Chicago, which supported his connection and communication abilities as a corporate trainer, facilitator, and executive coach to individuals working for professional firms. Rick loved being outdoors and throughout the year enjoyed walking through forests or along the shores of Lake Michigan, visiting marshes to watch seasonal bird migrations, or spending time with his family in Wisconsin. Rick also loved, and was a fierce defender of, the use of language. For birthdays or other family occasions, he would replace the lyrics of well-known songs with those of his own composition and encourage everyone to sing along with him. If he knew you well, he was not averse to suggesting you might be able to find a more precise adjective than the word "interesting." Rick's precision with language was regularly put into practice in his ongoing efforts to foster and nourish deep, meaningful connections and understanding with family, friends, colleagues, fraternity brothers, and his fellow men's group members. He was a movie buff, always on the lookout for the best streaming shows on television, loved live theater, and enjoyed singing any time an opportunity presented itself. Rick was predeceased by his beloved son Casey Dell Otto. He is survived by his adoring children Eric Linden Otto (Virginia Parrell), Allison Dell Otto, Jackson Dell Otto (Mark Splett); grandchildren Greta and Peter Otto; his brother Bob; his loving partner Cynthia (Cindy) Dvorak; and many devoted and cherished friends.

Not surprising to read that Rick had a full, gratifying life and continued to impart his thirst for learning and knowledge on others. Rick and Bob's parents attended all their basketball games at Quigley South and the two were fierce competitors. My condolences to the family and a wish for great and lasting memories for younger brother Bob.

I'm so sorry to hear about Rick's passing . He was a classmate and basketball teammate during our high school years . Although I hadn't seen him for awhile , I remember him always having a smile on his face , a kind and welcoming manner about him , and an outgoing and generous way much like his Dad Bob. To his children and grandchildren and family , please accept my heartfelt sympathy, and may Rick now rest in the peaceful arms of Our Lord .

I grew up with Rick at St. Daniel the Prophet parish in Chicago. We spent many summer afternoons and evenings playing basketball at Normandy Park and the b-ball leagues at Byrne School. I was also a classmate of his at Quigley South and have many memories of him playing on the varsity basketball team. We reconnected several years ago during several Quigley reunions and periodic lunches together. I will miss Rick as he was always friendly, helpful, and unusually perceptive in our thoughtful discussions.
R.I.P., my friend!
