Richard Anthony Screen, 80, of Thomaston, entered into his journey to heaven on December 15 at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after courageous battle with cancer-which he faced with his trademark strength, stubbornness, and sense of humor.

Richard was born on July 8, 1945, in Waterbury, Connecticut, son of the late Harry Screen of Thomaston and Eda Mannetti-Screen Zarrella of Waterbury. He graduated from Crosby High School.

Known to many as "Bud," Richard worked as a millwright throughout his career. He began his employment at Scovill Manufacturing in Waterbury, continued at New Departure (GM) in Bristol, and retired from Otis Elevator in Bristol. While at Otis, Bud began volunteering with Special Olympics, a commitment he proudly continued for over 25 years.

Bud enjoyed watching poker and visiting the casino to play Caribbean Stud Poker, tending to his tomato garden, and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Kentucky Derby. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren-cheering them on at sporting events, teaching them cribbage, or delivering lunch.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Judith (Berch) Screen; his daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy-Jo (KJ) and Robert Butkevicius, Suzanne Screen both of Thomaston, and Jennifer and Michael Regan of Naugatuck; and his grandchildren, Brian Butkevicius and Isabella Gartrell of Bristol, Evan Butkevicius and Sabrina Parietario, Alexa Kowalski, and Nathan Kowalski all of Thomaston. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law: Edward, George, Glenn and his nieces and nephews and cousins. Bud will also be deeply missed by his grandcat, Roq, with whom he shared a special bond from napping to headbutts. Bud is predeceased by his brother Harry Screen and sister Diane Clement.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 19 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lyons Funeral Home, 46 High Street, Thomaston. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 10:15 a.m. from Lyons Funeral Home to St. Thomas Church for Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at a later date.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Bristol Hospital, especially Dr. Robert Black, Dr. Radhik Parikh, and Dr. David Pizzuto, for their compassionate and exceptional care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bristol Health Visiting/Hospice Nurse program.
