Richard "Rick" Lawrence Shane, 70, passed away on February 19, 2025, in Kirkland, Washington. Born on April 1, 1954 in Seattle, Washington, he was a graduate of Nathan Hale High School, Class of 1972. Rick lived a life filled with adventure, resilience and a deep love of the water.
Rick worked at the Carnation Company, where he made ice cream, and most recently as a yacht broker at Signature Yachts in Seattle, WA. His passion for sailing was evident in his beloved boat, "Clear Horizon," which he not only sailed but also called home for a time in his younger years. Whether navigating open waters or enjoying the tranquility of the marina, sailing remained one of his greatest joys.
Beyond the sea, Rick found excitement in skiing down snowy slopes, playing tennis, and indulging in computer golf games. He cherished time spent along the shores of Oregon and Washington, especially in Lincoln City, Oregon. He also enjoyed visiting casinos and embracing the thrill of the game. His adventurous spirit was matched by his determination-he faced health challenges over the past nine years with remarkable strength and perseverance.
Rick is survived by his wife, Irene Retel, who was the love of his life; stepchildren Deseray Regier (Lane), Jarvis Retel (Katharine), and Brenden Retel (Kriselda); and his beautiful granddaughters Ava, Eden, and Mya Regier and Alice and Ruby Retel. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings Karen Somerville (John), Connie Grant (Dave), Mike Shane (Wendy), and Diane Ashby (Dave); as well as nine nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and nephews. (He was the best uncle and Papa Rick to the next generations.) Additionally, he is survived by his stepfather Jim Vandervlugt and a large extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Robert W. Shane and mother, Barbara L. Shane Vandervlugt.
Rick's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May the happy times he shared with family and friends bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
A memorial service will be held on April 26, 2025, at 1 :00 PM at Kenmore Community Church, located at 7504 NE Bothell Way in Kenmore, Washington. A reception will follow the service.

I met Rick about 38 years ago, at the Keg restaurant, off of 155th and Aurora. He lived on his sailboat in the Kenmore area. We had many adventures snow skiing and sailing. I have so many pictures of him in a photo album in storage, including him at the helm of his sailboat, going through Deception Pass. I met Irene about 7 years ago while out at the Tulalip Casino. Such a wonderful man. My condolences to Irene and all his family.

My husband Dan met Rick around 1967 and they became friends. I met Rick in the 7th grade. Rick and Dan loved to fish together. Rick was very competitive when it came to fish size! The picture of Rick holding the fish was around 40-45 lbs and he told Dan it was 51 lbs because Dan really did catch a 50lb fish! We had so many great times with Rick on his boat at the seafair events on his sailboat. Lots of parties! Rick may be gone but he will never be forgotten. So many great Memories.

I have immensely enjoyed Rick as a close Brother-in-Law since the day he walked my wife Karen down the aisle at our wedding! Always fun, we watched him be the most consistent winner at occasional family fun visits to casinos! His professional and life-long sailing skills allowed him to take family and friends along on his wonderful sailboat to explore Puget Sound! I and, i will always remember all the fun times that I had together with him watching baseball and football games, and visiting historical Salem, Massachussetts with Rick and Irene! Just the best times!

My gosh.. I'm typing with tears in my eyes.

We bought our Beneteau from Signature, but sadly, not from Rick. We met Rick as we were returning from our test sail with our salesman. Rick came down to catch us at the dock. After Rick was out of ear shot our salesman felt it necessary to tell us what an "idiot" Rick was. At the time we had no idea who he was, but that would change over the years.

In the end, our salesman was fired for lying to us and others. That was something Robby would not tolerate.. as we later found out. We also found out that buying a boat from Signature brought you into the "family", not just a customer. Over the following years, as we attended Signature events, we came to know Rick as anything but what our salesman thought about him. He was smart and knew his stuff. Moreover, he was a kind, friendly, generous, and loving man. We are proud to call Rick our friend!

Rick earned our friendship the hard way. He sold us a Beneteau 23 years ago and responsibly supported us as we dealt with manufacturing issues. We trusted him to sell that boat and purchased yet a larger Beneteau. Again he was fair and responsible and we met Irene and became friends. Rick and Ed both started dealing with serious illnesses and supported one another as they fought to survive. Rick sold our last boat during the pandemic and we kept in touch through phone conversations and lunches.
It was a privilege and pleasure to have known Rick. We are very sorry that Irene and their family have lost Rick.

Dear Rick, you will be missed deeply. Irene misses you more than words can say. Your family, friends, people who met you along the way, in this journey of life were enriched by knowing you and your calm, gentle way & political satire.

One very fond memory, was being present at your wedding. Irene asked me to take photographs. I watched your face as she approached you in her beautiful gown and her long blonde hair, you had a cherished look of awe and love.

It was quiet, sunny and a peaceful day. From that first photo at the alter to the last photo of you and Irene in car on the way to your honeymoon I felt you were soulmates met by chance or fate in a bar in Victoria, BC.

I edited the imagery and made a slideshow set to Cold Play´s Green eyes & Mahalia Jackson´s, Amazing Grace. So my humble words to you and Irene come from both songs:

-`Honey, you are the sea upon which I float, you´re the one I wanted to find and anyone who tried to deny you must be out of their minds.´

-`Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed.´

Casting some love and a bear hug you and Irene with a gentle knowing that you have gone from pain to peace in the beautiful transition to the beyond.

With the deepest respect, your sister-in-law, Leeta, nephew, Tate, and dog nephew, Finn +
