Richard G. Sumner, 78, of Poughkeepsie, formerly of Garrison, New York, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie surrounded by loved ones.

Born on March 20, 1947, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Chester Sumner and Evelyn Cammidge Sumner.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968.

After his military service, he went on to work in Investment Management, where he worked for many years before retiring. He also ran a successful liquor store.

On October 9, 1971, Richard married Susan Daby at St. Augustine's Church in Ossining, together they shared over 50 wonderful years together. Susan survives at home.

Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved playing pool and cards and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play poker. Sunday family dinners were a cherished tradition for Richard and he enjoyed family gatherings.

In retirement, he enjoyed taking long, scenic car rides with his wife and later with his grandson, Christopher, enjoying each journey they took together.

He is survived by his two daughters, Christine Percopo and husband Nick; Debbie Sumner and Rich Chin, two grandchildren whom he adored, Kate and Christopher Percopo.

He is also survived by his sister Phyllis, nieces, Melissa Coffey and Tina Sumner Barbaroso and nephew: Kevin Coffey.

Memorial calling hours will be from 2 PM to 5pm on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Sweet's Funeral Home, 4365 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY.

A memorial service will take place at 4:30 during the calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516 Topeka, KS 66675 (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude’s Place Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org)
