Richard Leonard Thompson, 94, of Amissville, Virginia, died peacefully, March 26, 2025, at Viva Senior Living at Berryville.
Richard was born April 23, 1930, in Fairfax County, Virginia; son of the late Roy and Lena Mae Croson Thompson. He served his country in the United States Army. Richard worked at the VA Hospital, but his true passions in life were woodworking and music. He played the acoustic and steel guitar. When Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline were in their early stages of music, he played in a backup band for each of them, not knowing how famous each of them would one day become.
Richard enjoyed more than sixty years with the love of his life, Jeannette Elizabeth McGee Thompson. She preceded him in death July 1, 2015.
He is survived by his children, Diana Atkins of Winchester, Raymond Thompson of Fairfax, and Deborah Gray of Charlottesville; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Along with his wife he is preceded in death by his son, Jerry Thompson, two grandchildren, Angela Marie Cole and Christopher Lee Thompson and his siblings Helen Cordle, Roy (Sonny) Thompson, Marie Tyler, and Katherine Spalding.
A funeral service will be April 3, 2025, at Jones Funeral Homes, at 10:30 am with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in Culpeper National Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
