Richard Eugene Ubben, 94, of Dumont, died Monday, Feb. 17, at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, of natural causes.
Richard was born June 6, 1930, at his parents' home near Aplington, son of Henry H. Jr. and Jennie (Fuls) Ubben. He married Virginia Rieman on Jan. 20, 1955, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church parsonage, Hampton. She died March 16, 2012.
Richard attended rural schools - starting at a location northeast of Kesley, then Cold Water Township #9 north of Bristow and Pittsford Township #3 north of Dumont. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954 and was a livestock and crop farmer in the Dumont area, retiring in 2007. He was a longtime deacon, elder and Sunday school treasurer at First Reformed Church, Bristow. In his later years, he enjoyed woodworking.
Richard is survived by: two daughters: Sandra (Jim) Nelson of Iowa Falls; Carmen (Merle) Hinz of Waterloo; a son: Eugene Ubben of Conrad; eight grandchildren: Sara (Darren) Brackin; Tina Hinz; Lydia (Noah) Rapp; Aaron and Leah Nelson; Conner (Amanda) Ubben; Samantha (Colton) Harold; Madison Ubben; grandson-in-law: Paul Link; six great-grandchildren, Olivia, Hunter and Chaise Brackin; Everly and Cecelia Rapp; and Parker Ubben. A seventh great-grandchild is on the way. Sister: Mavis (Arlyn) Engel.
He is preceded in death by: his parents; a brother-in-law, Merlyn (Judy) Rieman; a sister-in-law, Frances (Gary) Riles; a daughter-in-law, Darla Ubben; and a granddaughter, Karen Link.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, at Woodley Funeral Home, Dumont, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will take place at the Dumont Cemetery with military honors.
