Richard Lane Westerman, lovingly known as Rick, passed away on April 5, 2025, at the age of 69. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and laughter that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born on August 17, 1955, to Gerald and Doris Westerman. From an early age, he was known for his vibrant personality and warm heart. He graduated from Redford Union High School in 1972, where fate brought him together with the love of his life, Debbie Smith. High school sweethearts from the 10th grade, Rick and Debbie married in 1974 and built a beautiful life together over five decades.
After high school, Rick pursued a skilled trade and became a talented HVAC technician-a career he excelled in for 45 years before his well-earned retirement. His dedication to his work was matched only by his devotion to his family.
Rick was a proud and loving father to his three children: Chad, Elyse, and Cheyne. He never missed a game, recital, or school event-always the loudest and most enthusiastic supporter on the sidelines. He also served as an assistant soccer coach for his sons, helping shape not only their skills but their character.
Becoming a grandfather was one of Rick's greatest joys. He adored his grandson Henry and was overjoyed at the anticipation of meeting his soon-to-arrive second grandson. His family was the center of his world, and he gave of himself freely-whether it was completing a home improvement project around his children's homes, or offering a word of encouragement.
A true handyman, Rick selflessly gave his time and skills to help others, regularly volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul. His generosity touched many lives in both quiet and meaningful ways.
Rick's friendly demeanor and willingness to lend a hand brightened the lives of those around him. He readily connected with friends and strangers alike, effortlessly striking up conversations anywhere he went. You could often find him on the phone helping fellow HVAC technicians through a problem or even at the hardware store offering advice to fellow customers.
Rick was known for his boisterous, infectious laugh-a sound that could fill a room and warm a heart. He found joy in the simple things: tending to his yard, enjoying the outdoors, watching old western films, taking naps with the family dogs, and most of all his avid love of reading, which he would sneak in at any possible moment. His passion for history was profound, particularly when it came to World War II, but he also blazed through crime thrillers like the Alex Cross series and anything related to mobster history.
Rick's life was a testament to love, loyalty, and laughter. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Beloved husband of Debbie Westerman; loving father of Chad (Becky Ashcraft) Westerman, Elyse (Tommy) Taylor, and Cheyne (Nicole) Westerman; proud grandfather of Henry Westerman and second grandson on the way; cherished brother of Randy (Karen) Westerman.
Richard is preceded in passing by his parents Gerald and Doris Westerman.
