Richard Doyle Wheeler, 75, formerly of Hiawassee, GA, passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2025, in Oklahoma City.
Richard, a passionate outdoorsman who loved to fish, golf, and hunt, lived a life of dedicated service. With unwavering courage and dedication, he proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, distinguishing himself during the Vietnam War. His life's journey began in his hometown of Bremen, GA, leading him later to Fayetteville, GA, and eventually to a well-deserved retirement amidst the tranquil beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Hiawassee, GA. In 2020, he embarked on his final chapter, relocating to Oklahoma City.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna McWhorter of Hiawassee, GA; his father, Roy Wheeler of Tallapoosa, GA; his stepmother, Mozelle Wheeler of Tallapoosa, GA; his stepfather, Claude (Mac) McWhorter of Hiawassee, GA; and his brother, Jerry Wheeler of Douglasville, GA.
He is survived by his loving sister, Katherine Fowler, of Brinklow, MD. Richard was a devoted father to his son, Troy Wheeler, 46, and his daughter-in-law, Katie, of Edmond, OK, as well as his daughter, Ashley Dawson, 44, and her husband, Nathan, of Summerville, SC. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Preston, 23, of Calabasas, CA; Bella, 20, of Clemson, SC; Merritt, 19, of Stillwater, OK; Kendall, 18, of Summerville, SC; and Parker, 17, of Edmond, OK.
Richard's legacy of strength, dedication, and love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Details regarding the celebration of Richard's life in Hiawassee will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to The Lodge at Brookline in Oklahoma City, which provided him with exceptional care in his final years.
