Richard Edgar Merrit Whittaker, 80, of Newport, passed away on July 25, 2025 at his home surrounded by family.
A service to honor Richard’s life will be held at a later date.
Richard, was a dedicated employee of Carteret County Schools for 33 years. Known for his strong work ethic and kind spirit, he spent his career as a custodian, always taking pride in his work and caring deeply for the school community. Outside of work, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures — long walks, cooking homemade meals for his family, and tending to his yard with great care. He had a special love for fresh, local produce and could often be found picking berries or visiting nearby farms. Generous and thoughtful, he delighted in delivering food to friends and neighbors, always spreading warmth through his cooking and presence. His legacy of love, service, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
