Rita Hornbeck lived a life full of love, laughter, and kindness. On June 4, 2025, she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the family she cherished.
Rita was born on November 10, 1951, in Logansport, to the late John and Hazel (Reed) Smith.
On June 12, 1979, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Rita married the love of her life, George Hornbeck. Together, they built a beautiful family.
Rita was a 1969 graduate of Logansport High School. She worked as a clerk in the Eel Township Assessor's office during Carol Rhoades' tenure. Rita was one of the first court-appointed child advocates in Cass County when her cousin, Judge Julian Ridlen initiated the CASA program. She was instrumental in helping with the development of the Julian Ridlen Aim Park.
As a homemaker, she created a warm and welcoming home down a wooded drive, where family gatherings often took place by the backyard pool. She enjoyed traveling, crafting, and spending time with her grandchildren, creating lasting memories with those she loved.
Surviving with her husband, George, of 46 years, are three children, James (Lisa) Hatton, Randolph Chris (Jennifer) Corcoran, and Heather (Michael) Huffer; one brother, Tom (Vicki) Smith, sister, Duanna Noel, nine precious grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special aunt for whom she was named, Reta (Ron) Gilbert.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Roxanne Allen.
Private services will be held at Fisher Funeral Chapel.
