Rita Scagnelli Obituary

Rita Scagnelli, 101, of Waxhaw, North Carolina, passed away peacefully. She was born on January 25, 1925, in New York City, New York, to the late John and Mary Mazzocchi.

Rita was one of four daughters and outlived both her oldest and youngest sisters. She attended public schools in New York City and graduated from Washington Irving High School. She often shared stories of her youth, including how proms were not held during the war years.

Following World War II, Rita met the love of her life, Michael Scagnelli. They were married in 1949 and shared a devoted and loving marriage until his passing in 2017.

Together, they built a beautiful family, raising two children, Diane and Michael. Rita was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.

A woman of deep faith, Rita was a devoted Catholic who recited the Rosary daily. She was also an active member of the Golden Ages and enjoyed a vibrant social life. Her many hobbies included participating in clubs, spending time with friends, knitting until her hands no longer allowed it, and playing cards.

Rita's greatest joy in life was her family. In 2025, she celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Even then, many remarked on her sharp mind and spirited personality.

In addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Rita is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
